BAD NEWSI recently read this comic strip in Cyanide and Happiness. It’s silly and funny and I had a laugh reading it. Yesterday I was reading Psalm 112, and verse 7 almost talks about the same thing!! It’s about the righteous, God fearing and upright person.

“They will have no fear of bad news;
Their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord.”

I was reminded of the comic and how the character in it reacted to the news. I wonder if we could react like that when we hear bad news. It’s something to think about.

I loved the whole Psalm though. So I’m going to post it in its entirety. It’s an assurance of the blessings that God wants to give people who fear Him, delight in His word, give freely to the poor, conduct their affairs with justice and are compassionate and gracious. Not that I’m anywhere close to that, but I like how simple the Psalm is and how easy it is to understand what God expects from us and what he’s willing to give us. I guess verse 7 and 8 also remind us that things aren’t always going to be easy and we’re not going to only hear what we want to hear. But even if things are hard now, we will always triumph in the end.

1. Praise the Lord.
Blessed are those who fear the Lord,
who find great delight in his commands.

2. Their children will be mighty in the land;
the generation of the upright will be blessed.

3. Wealth and riches are in their houses,
and their righteousness endures forever.

4. Even in darkness light dawns for the upright,
for those who are gracious and compassionate and righteous.

5. Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely,
who conduct their affairs with justice.

6. Surely the righteous will never be shaken;
they will be remembered forever.

7. They will have no fear of bad news;
their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord

8. Their hearts are secure, they will have no fear;
in the end they will look in triumph on their foes.

9. They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor,
their righteousness endures forever;
their horn will be lifted high in honor.

10. The wicked will see and be vexed,
they will gnash their teeth and waste away;
the longings of the wicked will come to nothing.

My new resolution for 2012 – to start practising my guitar again. I’ve actually made that resolution a few times before as well, it just didn’t work out. I hope this time will be different.

This article might sound a bit selfish, but it means something to me. When I started learning to play the guitar I always wanted to play in a place with flashing lights, a super excited band, a cool backdrop, jumping audience etc., I used to see videos of churches like Hillsong(especially Hillsong-united) and think how cool it would be to play in a place like that. In reality though, it took me a few years to even get the chance to play with a decent band and as time went on and I started working, I kind of lost the interest to practice the guitar. I was happy playing where I got the opportunity to.

Playing with the Uturn band

Last year I got the chance to go to Japan for work and in Japan I was part of a super cool church called JesusLifehouse. When I walked into church and saw the band play, the first thing that came to my mind was –‘hmm, could I play here???’ And in time I got the opportunity to play the guitar in that church. It was so awesome. Being part of the worship team there was more than just playing music. It was about God and people. Commitment was highly valued. The amount of time spent for practice was very less, but each person practiced their part really hard and together the band always (almost always) sounded perfect. I knew that, every time I got on stage to play I was contributing to the bigger cause of reaching the lost for Jesus.

So when I played with the band there for the first time, it was like a dream come true for me. There were flashing lights, a super excited band, singers who were all over the place, an awesome backdrop, jumping audience and still God was being glorified and people’s lives were being changed. (I must admit that I’m pretty self –conscious while playing the guitar though, haha). When I came home that night, I thanked God for remembering things that I gave up. It still reminds me of what an awesome God I serve. If He even cares about the little dreams I have, then imagine about my big dreams – my awesome future, things I wanna do for God. I can never stop being excited about the great plans he has for my life.

Jer 29:11 is a verse that has always spoken to me. But it comes with a condition in verse 13 that has challenged me as well.

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart (Jer 29:11,13)

I haven’t written anything here in a while. Actually I’ve only written one article here. That too ages ago about my first trip to Japan. But I was reading something in the Bible last week and thought I should write about it.

I Chronicles 13:9-10

When they came to Chidons threshing floor, Uzza put out his hand to hold the ark, for the oxen stumbled. Then the anger of the Lord was aroused against Uzza, and He struck him because he put his hand to the ark; and he died there before God.When I read this I felt like, wow, that’s pretty strict!! He was only trying to hold it because it was going to fall down right? Why should he die for doing that? Isn’t that unfair? Then I read the next few chapters and I came to this verse.

I Chronicles 15:13

For because you did not do it the first time, the Lord our God broke out against us, because we did not consult Him about the proper order.

There is a right way to do something and wrong ways of doing it. The wrong ways are

  • When we do whatever we want or whatever we feel like doing or
  • When we assume that this is what God wants us to do without asking him and reading his word to find out.

Whether it’s something personal or something we want to do for God through Church or any other way, there is only one right way to do something – Ask God, read His Word and obey it.
